Five for Friday!

This week I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching again for Five for Friday!

I received 2 free books from Scholastic on Monday! For small business Saturday Scholastic sent out flyers to the school that I work in saying that if you visited a certain number of businesses and sent back a the flyer that they would send you free books. So I went, sent the flyer, and I got some books! - So cool! The best part was I forgot about the whole thing so it was a nice surprise.

With the girls that I watch after school we made snow today! It was so much fun and so easy. They played with this for over an hour (1st grader and 3rd grader)! We made it together.

Here's the recipe:

3 cups Corn Starch
1/2 cup Conditioner

THAT'S IT!

It's puppy time! So, next Tuesday my boyfriend is getting a puppy and that's him! We are both excited and are both teachers - so when's a better time to get a puppy than over February Break? I'm sure he'll pop up in next Friday's FFF.

So we read this book and did a summary/sequencing activity with it today. It was a really good book for making predictions and text to self connections as well. The students LOVED it and it went perfectly with Valentine's Day. Click on the image to get a peek inside to see what it's all about.

I thought I'd share my nail polish with you all - mainly because I thought it was very Valentines Dayesque. Here it is - OPI Dutch Tulips. Check out my Tumblr blog, Teacher Clothes - OH MY! for more info on outfits from this week.

Happy Weekend & February Break!

Pinterest Pick 3 - February

So I have decided to share this month's top 3 Pinterest picks through this wonderful link set up by Inspired Owl's Corner and PAWSitively Teaching.

With February break and Valentine's day coming up so soon, I know that the excitement level in the classroom will be rising all to quickly. I chose 3 engaging activities to try (key word try) to keep the students on task as we enter the last week of school before break.

I just loved all these ideas for a Valentine's party. The only one that I wouldn't have been able to use with my class is Cupid's Arrow. Although I think this game looks so cute, my class just wouldn't be able to handle it :( There are even free signs available to use for the different centers!

This wonderful idea came from:

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but it seems that whenever the kids create these cute valentines holders out of paper or paper lunch sacs they rip, and the valentines are all over the floor which begins multiple arguments about who's valentine is who's. I think this idea will fix all of that! I love the idea of having parents send in empty gallon milk jugs and then cutting off the tops and decorating with heart stickers. This way students can carry their valentines home much easier as well.

Although this last pin isn't as fun as the previous two I love it! I found this pin on my newsfeed a few days ago when I was just scrolling through but I think that it is a great idea! Each child gets a strip of paper with the numbers of the test. They color in the question numbers that they got incorrect on the test as you review it together. Very easily you can see which question stumped the kids (AKA - probably a poorly worded question OR a point that you did not teach well). This will let me know where I need to go back and reteach and it will show me quickly which students really struggled. I would have all my students use the same colored crayon because it would just make it easier for me to see the pattern.

Five for Friday!

This week I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching again for Five for Friday!

I bought Valentine's Day socks at the dollar store to wear next week! I am so excited to wear them :)

I was so excited to have a snow day on Monday I couldn't even contain myself. We got so much snow, we actually ended up with about 15 inches when everything was all said and done. It was up to my knees halfway through the day!

I posted my FIRST bundle ever to TPT earlier this week. I was so excited to post these and hope that they will do well. I have shared in a recent blog post about my new obsession with task cards and I am actually thinking about using them for morning work soon!

Click on the image below or this link to check it out!

I finally got my new camera! I actually got a Samsung camera for Christmas but it didn't work out of the box... Yes, I know, you didn't think that could happen... me neither. So long story short Samsung wouldn't do anything about the camera, but the store I ordered from, Crutchfield was wonderful and replaced it with this beauty! I absolutely love it and am so excited to learn all about it. You can look forward to better quality photos!

I love these sentence strips. I did a sight word lesson just practicing sight words on these sentence strips and it worked wonderfully. I love that they have these at the dollar store because it doesn't make me feel bad about using them up.

After we went over the words and came up with sentences for them and spelled some of them we made sight word collages. I wish I had taken a picture of the student work but, they turned out really nice. The students were allowed to write the words every which way, and write in all different types of letters (bubbles, swirly, wavy, etc.) I put a few of the sight words at each table and the students moved around to get all of the sight words. When they had all of them or an appropriate amount they were allowed to decorate the words by coloring them with colored pencil or crayon. They LOVED it.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

February Currently

Today I am linking up with Farley from Oh Boy 4th Grade for her February Currently.
Listening: I have an obsession, rather and OBESSION with Project Life. I have completed one full album project life style of a Disney World trip but have not continued with it since then. I want to get back into the swing of it so badly because I like it so much but I just don't take enough pictures daily. It's on my resolutions list for this year.
Loving: Grey's Anatomy is my favorite. How nice was it to have it back last Thursday? It makes my week!
Thinking: Really, really, are you sure? Ugh, 6 more weeks of this?! I'm not sure how much I can take.
Pageant Title: Now I need to clear this one up because I do NOT think that I am a fashionista, but that being said I do LOVE my clothes and I have so many you might think I am crazy, but I love and wear them all! I also have a Tumblr blog dedicated to just "teacher clothes" that I will post outfits to frequently. Check it out: Teacher Clothes - OH MY!

Student Learning Objectives Posted in the Classroom

The school that I work in requires teachers to post Student Learning Objectives in student friendly language. I hate having to write them out every week, especially because many objectives are repeated over multiple weeks. I decided that I wanted a card system to use on a small pocket chart. This is what I came up with and I LOVE it!

I decided to look for I can statements on Teachers Pay Teachers that align to the Common Core Standards. There are many available, both free and paid. Once I decided I wanted a card system and knew that these were available I decided to use ones that someone else made over making my own because there was no need to reinvent the wheel on this one. I came upon some really nice looking ones for first grade at Kreative Designs by Kristi.

And that became my first step in the creation of this pocket chart. I downloaded both the math and ELA packets and got started. These cards are also color coded which came in handy later on. Get the Math ones here, and the ELA ones here.

After I downloaded the cards I decided that I did not want mine to be so big. I knew that I would be using several of them each week - as I planned to put up I can statements for the whole week on Monday and then switch them out the following week. I knew that If I had kept them as large as they were when I downloaded them that I would have to take up a lot of space in my classroom. So I decided to shrink them down. This became my second step, making these free resources work for me so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel.

The first thing I did was click to print them I chose to print pages 2 - 20 of the math packet because I didn't need the title page. I then went to ht pull down menu (see arrow) and chose layout. This will get me where I needed to look to resize these cards.

Next I changed the pages per sheet to 4. This will allow 4 of the pages in the packet to be printed on one piece of paper. Now, this saved me paper, ink, and space on my walls in my classroom - a win, Win, WIN! To make sure you have done it correctly the preview should show the shrunken cards like it does in the screenshot above.

Last I saved these changes into a PDF. This way if I ever had to print them out again I have them already set. I then repeated these steps for the ELA cards and printed them all out. After printing I laminated them all with my Scotch laminator which works like a charm - you can get one here! Then I cut them all out. They ended up being about 4x1.5 inches.

So after I had this huge stack of cards I knew I had to come up with some sort of organizational system for them. I remembered having this plastic index card tub and decided that that would be the perfect fit. But they needed a better way to stay organized within the tub, so the dividers were born. I looked to my trusty paper crafting supplies (p.s. I LOVE Project Life) and pulled out a tab punch, scrapbook paper, and some washi tape.

- Note, if you do not have either of these you can buy plastic tabs for index cards and use nail polish remover to take of the pre printed letters, or you can cut them out yourself using a template online. I would highly suggest investing in a tab punch - I use mine all the time and more so for teaching things than crafting things. I like the ability to make tabs for any sized page and find it highly convenient. You can get it on Amazon here, but Michaels also carries it and you can use one of their coupons and get a 15% teacher discount (that's how I bought mine!)

I typed my tabs up in a word document using text boxes. It came out pretty messy but it did not matter to me because I knew that I would be punching them out. I have included these in a free download through a google drive document for you.

Then, I cut some colored craft paper to 3x5 and color coded it with the colors of my I can statement cards. I took my tabs and taped them to the top of the craft paper with wash tape and trimmed off the excess. I then ran all of these through the laminator as well for durability. They turned out like this:

Then I piled all of my goodies into that index card tub that i "had". Well I thought I had one but could not find it anywhere. I still am 99% positive I have it but cannot find it. Anyways I got too fed up looking for it and finally caved and bought a new one at Staples. It was $3.50 which I thought was a tad much but I bought it anyways. While I was there I did find 50 CENT border on sale which made up for it. Here's what it looked like then.

And I ended up with this as the final product and I am really happy with it. I actually found the pocket chart at a Target dollar spot a while back. I only purchased on because it was one of the things that was $3 instead of $1. Looking back on it I wish I had purchased more as it is a really nice size and I haven't ever seen any others this small.

I hope this will help you if you have had some trouble figuring out how to post your objectives in student friendly language. As one last piece of information here are links to free downloads on Teachers Pay Teachers:

Kindergarten: Math here, ELA here

First Grade: Math here, ELA here

Second Grade: Math and ELA here

Third Grade: Math here, ELA here

Enjoy! If you are in my area enjoy your snow day! Oh my goodness we have so much snow here and no plows have been through yet. It does look very pretty though. Happy Monday!

* An update, I just found out that the wording for these cards came from The Curriculum Corner. You can visit them by clicking on the link. You can also download their I can statement posters by clicking here.*
